What do people say who have been on a trip to the Dominican Republic?

After my first trip, my "needs" list and "wants" list completely changed. I learned that you do not need stuff to be happy. I learned that things will go exactly as they are supposed to regardless of how much you plan. I can't wait to go and be used in any way possible. - Anna Allen

I have left my heart there...so there's no questions I have to go back. We go thinking we're helping them but I always come back with gifts of the heart and blessed beyond words. From the team members to the sweet people of Barahona...God definitely has his hands all over this. - Paula Lambert

I've been down to the Dominican Republic twice. Our church had been going and Dale Williams was very active. When he mentioned that he was taking Megan down for her senior project, my daughter Amanda and I tagged along.

After that I was hooked. The people are warm and loving, especially the children. The country is beautiful, the weather nice, especially in the winter and there are so many opportunities.

Sometimes in America it seems like it is hard to have an impact but there one person can have a tremendous impact on people's lives. My two trips down there have been wonderful and the kids from the DR are in my thoughts a lot.  I consider it to be one of the most life changing experiences I have had.  The other nice thing is that we are continuing to work there and are developing a permanent connection. - Mike Vitamvas

There are a number of accommodations in Barahona that will fit your group's needs.

Hotel Costa Larimar is located in the town of Barahona and about 15 miles (40 minutes) from Batey 7.   It is easy walking distance to most things you might need.   Rooms are clean, comfortable and air conditioned.  Food is great and they can accommodate large groups.  It is located on the bay side and has beautiful sunrise and sunsets.  You can have a meal plan included with your stay.  It is served buffet style and is very good.  The dinning area is open air as it is in most of Barahona.

Cell phone service with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are pretty good.  Make sure you have the international plan and data package if you are going to be making phone calls thought.  There is WI-FI at the hotel although as with many things in the Dominican Republic it may not work all the time.  Photos of the hotel are below.
Pastor Pedro who helps coordinate a lot of the mission trips from the Dominican side has a large dorm that is available at his church.  It can accommodate 30 people and has sleeping quarters, kitchen, dinning area and an open gathering area upstairs.  The main part of the building is open air but most of the rooms do have air conditioning.  Cell service is good since the church is located in the center of Barahona.  No internet access but there are several internet cafes within a couple blocks.
Another popular place to stay is PlayaZul.  It can accommodate a group of 50 people.  You can have your meals included but you order off the menu so it takes longer than at Hotel Costa Larimar.  It is about 4 miles outside of Barahona right on the ocean.  It has amazing views of the ocean and surrounding areas.  Cell phone service is spotty and I'm not sure if it offers internet access.
